How would you like to be a resident of the sole remaining tobacco warehouse in Halifax County?

You can at New Brick Historic Lofts!

Tobacco was an integral part of the southern Virginia economy from the late-nineteenth century through the mid-to late-twentieth century. Large warehouses were constructed well into the mid-twentieth century to hold the large quantities of tobacco brought by surrounding farmers to the tobacco markets which were centered near rail travel. The New Brick Warehouse is typical of tobacco warehouses and auction houses which were utilitarian structures, unfinished on the interior, but with many skylights to provide enough light for buyers to inspect the tobacco. Loading docks on the west elevation and the arched wagon entrances on the north and south elevations facilitated the moving of tobacco in and out of the structure.
